DescriptionSteroidogenic factor 1;STF-1;SF-1;Alternative Name: Nuclear receptor subfamily 5 group A member 1
Source organismMacropus eugenii (Tammar wallaby)
Taxonomical ClassificationEukaryota; Metazoa; Chordata; Craniata; Vertebrata; Euteleostomi;Mammalia; Metatheria; Diprotodontia; Macropodidae; Macropus.
Subcellular locationNucleus (By similarity)
Developmental StageExpressed by both ovaries and testes on the day of birth, just prior to the onset of testicular differentiation, until at least 8 days after birth by which time the ovary also has begun to sexually differentiate.
Similarity Belongs to the nuclear hormone receptor family. NR5 subfamily. Contains 1 nuclear receptor DNA-binding domain.
Tissue SpecificityExpressed in the pre-granulosa and Sertoli cells of the ovary and testis, respectively. In the testis it is also present in the interstitial cells. In the adult ovary it is expressed in the interstitial gland, and in the granulosa cells and theca interna of small to medium-sized antral follicles, but is not expressed in large antral follicles.
Post translational modification Acetylation stimulates the transcriptional activity (By similarity).
Function Transcriptional activator. Seems to be essential for sexual differentiation and formation of the primary steroidogenic tissues. Binds to the Ad4 site found in the promoter region of steroidogenic P-450 genes such as CYP11A, CYP11B and CYP21B. Also regulates the Muellerian inhibiting substance (AMH) gene as well as the AHCH and STAR genes. 5'-YCAAGGYC-3' and 5'-RRAGGTCA-3' are the consensus sequences for the recognition by NR5A1/FTZF1. The SFPQ-NONO-NR5A1/SF-1 complex binds to the CYP17 promoter and regulates basal and cAMP-dependent transcriptional avtivity. Binds phospholipids with a phosphatidylinositol (PI) headgroup, in particular PI(3,4)P2 and PI(3,4,5)P3 (By similarity).
