| Disease Introduction Mechanism | Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an obligate intracellular protozoan that causes toxoplasmosis in humans and many warm-blooded animals. Approximately 30%–50% of the population is infected with T. gondii worldwide. Toxoplasmosis is considered a leading cause of death in immunocompromised or congenitally infected patients. Acute infec- tion with T. gondii in pregnant women often causes severe birth defects such as intracranial calcification, chorioretinitis, hydrocephaly and mental retardation. |
