Disease Introduction MechanismCryptococcosis is a severe fungal infection usually observed in individuals with immunosuppression, particularly those with advanced HIV disease (AHD).The disease is caused by yeasts belonging to the Cryptococcus genus, and most infections are associated with C. neoformans and C. gattii complexes. This fungus can invade various organs following a primary respi-ratory infection; however, it exhibits a pronounced predilec- tion for the central nervous system (CNS), often resulting in meningitis, which is associated with high mortality, particu- larly if cryptococcosis diagnosis and antifungal therapy are delayed.
