CohortIn total, 528 birds were used for this study. All of the birds were allocated to the experimental diets during the first phase (day 0–20). However, 336 birds were allocated as twelve replicate pens with 7 birds per pen, and 192 birds allocated as twelve replicate pens with 4 birds per pen. The latter were raised in the same conditions, having access to the same experimental diets, but were not sampled at day 20. By contrast, they were all kept on toxin free-diet for an additional 2 weeks, which was considered as the recovery phase. Birds were housed in stainless-steel battery brooders equipped with nipple-type waterers and thermostatically controlled heaters. The mortality of birds was recorded daily.
