| Disease Introduction Mechanism | In Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), fungal infections are the third leading cause of late onset sepsis among very low birth weight neonates (below 1.5 kg). Besides the low birth weight, other risk factors such as antibiotic therapy, parenteral nutrition, presence a central venous catheter and abdominal surgery are the most frequent in infections by fungi. The short-term complications are characterized by kidney injury, meningitis and endocarditis; whereas long-term complications are above all neurodevelopmental problems. Among the affected newborns, the mortality rate is around 30%. |
