| Disease Introduction Mechanism | Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCMycosis) is a systemic mycosis in Latin America it is caused by the thermally dimorphic fungus, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (Pb), which is found in soil. The fungus induces the infection by respiratory route and oropharyngeal lesions are secondary to pulmonary infection.1,2 Clinically, the oral lesions classically show an erythaematous finely granular ulceration, speckled with pinpoint haemorrhages, with a mulberry-like surface.1,3 They are usually multiple, affecting gingiva, palate, lip, buccal mucosa, tongue and floor of the mouth. Microscopically, the lesions exhibit epithelioid granulomas, intra-epithelial microabscess and pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia (PEH). |
