Disease Introduction MechanismMadurella mycetomatis is a fungus capable of inducing eumycetoma in humans. Eumycetoma is a major mycological health problem of severe morbidity in tropical and subtropical areas. The disease is characterized by extensive tumor-like s.c. masses and discharge of fungal grains, blood, and pus and primarily affects the earning members of the society. Treatment of advanced cases usually implies amputa- tion of the infected limb. This disease has been reported in many countries including Sudan, Somalia, Senegal, Mauritania, Kenya, Ni- ger, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Chad, Cameroon, Djibouti, India, Yemen, Mexico, Venezuela, Columbia, and Argentina. In Sudan alone, within 2.5 years 1231 mycetoma cases were recorded.
