| Cohort | Here, measured the plasma and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid concentrations of the neutrophil-activating cytokmes IL-8 and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in 34 HIV-infected patients with PCP (group I, n = 12), bacterial pneumonia (group II, n = 17), or pulmonary tuberculosis (group III, n = 5). Six HIV-seronegative patients (group IV) with non-infectious pulmonary conditions (sarcoidosis, 2; drug-induced lupus, 1; chronic obstructive lung disease, 2; non-small cell lung cancer, 1) served as controls. All patients underwent fiberoptic bronchoscopy with subsequent BAL for diagnostic reasons. |
