Disease Introduction MechanismCryptococcus neoformans is the causative agent of cryp- tococcosis, a disease typified by an initial pulmonary infec- tion which can disseminate to produce an ultimately fatal form ofmeningitis. The disease has become an important infection in individuals suffering from AIDS and is now recognizedas the fourth most common life-threatening infection in this patient group. The diagnosis of the disease relies either on the isolation of the yeast or on the detection of capsular polysaccharide via the latex agglutination test with either cerebrospinal fluid or serum.
