CohortSerum and CSF samples were obtained from 40 patients with infectious meningitis who required CSF examination at Kitasato University Hospital and cooperating hospitals. The clinical diagnosis included 25 patients with viral meningitis (ten herpes simplex, ten varicella zoster, three measles and two mumps), who had been diagnosed by having elevated levels of the respective antibodies in the CSF; five patients with mycotic menin- gitis (all Cryptococcus neohormans); and ten patients with bacterial meningitis (four Streptococcus pneumoniae, four Haemophilus influenzae, two Pseudomonas aeruginozae), who had been diagnosed by CSF culture.
