OrganismConus imperialis
TxonomyEukaryota; Opisthokonta; Metazoa; Eumetazoa; Bilateria; Protostomia; Spiralia; Lophotrochozoa; Mollusca; Gastropoda; Caenogastropoda; Neogastropoda; Conoidea; Conidae (cone shells); Conus; Stephanoconus; Conus imperialis (Imperial cone)
Subcellular LocationSecreted
Developmental StageNA
SimilarityBelongs to the insulin family.
Tissue SpecificityExpressed by the venom gland.
Post Translational ModificationNA
FunctionThis venom insulin facilitates prey capture by rapidly inducing hypoglycemic shock. Intraperitoneal injection of this peptide into zebrafish lowers blood glucose with the same potency than human insulin. In vivo; when applied to water; this peptide reduces overall locomotor activity of zebrafish larvae; observed as a significant decrease in the percentage of time spent swimming and movement frequency.
