DescriptionNuclear receptor subfamily 2 group E member 1;Alternative Name: Nuclear receptor TLX;Alternative Name: Protein tailless homolog;Tll;mTll
Source organismMus musculus (Mouse)
Taxonomical ClassificationEukaryota; Metazoa; Chordata; Craniata; Vertebrata; Euteleostomi;Mammalia; Eutheria; Euarchontoglires; Glires; Rodentia; Sciurognathi;Muroidea; Muridae; Murinae; Mus.
Subcellular locationNucleus (By similarity)
Developmental StageExpression is first detected on 8 dpc and increases until 13.5 dpc, then sharply decreases from day 13 dpc until 18 dpc. Expression is barely detected in newborn brains but increases again after birth.
Similarity Belongs to the nuclear hormone receptor family. NR2 subfamily. Contains 1 nuclear receptor DNA-binding domain.
Tissue SpecificityExpressed in embryonic developing forebrain and in dorsal midbrain. Outside the neural epithelium only found in the surface ectoderm at the site of nasal placode formation, where subsequently the nasal and olfactory epithelium is formed. Also expressed in adult brain.
Post translational modificationN/A
Function Orphan receptor that binds DNA as a monomer to hormone response elements (HRE) containing an extended core motif half- site sequence 5'-AAGGTCA-3' in which the 5' flanking nucleotides participate in determining receptor specificity (By similarity). May be required to pattern anterior brain differentiation. Involved in the regulation of retinal development and essential for vision. Tlx-/-mice show central nervous system cortical defects (reduction in the size of rhinencephalic and limbic structures of the brain, including the olfactory, infrarhinal and entorhinal cortex, amygdala, and dentate gyrus) and progressive retinal and optic nerve degradation with associated blindness.
